Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity
will look at three primary areas when searching for
potential homeowners. These three areas are:
• Need for Housing:
Your current shelter could be overcrowded or in need of
major physical repairs. If you pay over a certain
percentage of your monthly gross income to cover housing
expenses (i.e. rent), or if you are unable to acquire a
simple, decent home using conventional methods, you have a need for
decent, affordable housing.
• Ability to Pay: While you must have a need for
housing to qualify for the program, your income must be
sufficient to allow you to pay the monthly mortgage
payment. Habitat offers affordable homes sold at cost with
0% interest mortgages to families with low household
income. A tri-merged credit report is also considered.
• Willingness to Partner: You
must be willing and available to participate as a partner
with Habitat. You must put in 500 hours of "sweat equity"
- time spent hard at work building your own home or a
future neighbors - to become a homeowner. You are also
required to attend financial classes at Tabor Community
Services.
Applications are reviewed and
families are selected for participation based on these
criteria by a panel of trained community volunteers. There
is a $10.00 application fee.
Lancaster
Area Habitat for Humanity is an equal housing opportunity
provider.
