Emerald
Valley
Our
success during the past years encouraged the LAHFH board to increase
our vision. As a result, the board developed a mission to create
a Habitat Community in Lancaster City, Emerald Valley. We purchased
9.7 acres of undeveloped land in Lancaster to build 62 single-family
homes for low-income qualified families.
The
families who purchase these homes will
benefit by being homeowners and will face all
the responsibilities of home ownership. LAHFH
assists these families to achieve
self-reliance in several ways. A partner from
the Habitat Partnership Committee is assigned
to aid his/her family during the construction
period, during a rental year, and at
settlement. The family is taught skills
needed to work on their house, provided
assistance with budgeting, instructed on how
to make simple repairs and taught how to get
more complicated repairs fixed by
contractors. The partner truly assists this
family to become a self-reliant
homeowner.
Most
Habitat projects are single house
construction or renovations. The Emerald
Valley project is unique. Families who are
living in inner city neighborhoods and are
not able to move to a better area due to
their low income will now be able to live in
a more pleasant neighborhood. Emerald Valley
has enabled these families to live in the
pleasant neighborhood they have been
searching for. These homes will be offered to
them at an affordable monthly mortgage
payment.
Our
project will also provide a "step up" for
families who are living in small apartments
because they cannot afford a more comfortable
place due to extremely high rent. These
families will have a home that is
comfortable, and more importantly, at a low,
interest free monthly payment.
This
community concept in Lancaster is a unique
idea for Habitat for Humanity. The Emerald
Valley project goes beyond single units. We
are developing a Habitat community in a
middle class neighborhood. A Habitat partner
assists these families for a full year in
house maintenance, lawn and garden
maintenance, budgeting, family living and
most of all responsibility of home
ownership.
